Bta-mir-2904 is a microRNA (miRNA) identified among the top 10 differentially expressed miRNAs in a study, suggesting its potential biological significance [PMC9810022]. This miRNA is associated with a bacterial cluster that includes Prevotella and Bacteroides, indicating its possible role in the bovine microbiome [PMC6708143]. Bta-mir-2904 exhibits a high diversity of isomiRs, with over 100 variants identified at both the 5' and 3' ends, which may reflect its complex regulatory functions [PMC4609085]. It was also found to be highly expressed in the SA group of bulls compared to controls, suggesting its involvement in specific physiological or pathological processes [PMC6896338]. Additionally, bta-mir-2904 was prevalently expressed in low fertility (LF) bulls and identified as targeting the IL1A gene as well as DHX58, which is involved in pathogen recognition [PMC8329915], [PMC7943879]. Despite these associations with various regulatory functions, bta-mir-2904 expression was slightly downregulated when comparing low somatic cell count (SCC) to control groups [PMC8903571]. Moreover, its expression was lower during colostrum lactation compared to peak lactation [PMC5414302], and it was significantly enriched in heat stress-derived extracellular vesicles (HS-EVs) compared to control-EVs [PMC7519046].
