In this study, the endurance or resistance to Cd stress in Yunyan 2 might be enhanced by miR169 and miR6019 (up-regulated in Guiyan 1 but unchanged in Yunyan 2) and miR319 (unchanged in Guiyan 1 but down-regulated in Yunyan 2). [score:7]
Among these, 25 miRNAs (7 families: miR169, miR171, miR394, miR398, miR399, miR408 and miR482) were up-regulated while 8 miRNAs from a single family (miR166) and nta-miRNA6149a were down-regulated in both genotypes under Cd stress (Supplemental Table S4 and Table 2). [score:7]
In response to drought stress, miR169 is down-regulated, whereas its target NFYA5 (nuclear transcription factor Y subunit alpha, also known as the CCAAT-box binding factor) is induced in Arabidopsis. [score:6]
In addition, 13 miRNAs (7 families such as miR156, miR169 and miR482) were down-regulated in Yunyan 2 but unchanged in Guiyan 1 under Cd stress (Table 3). [score:4]
Of these 53 miRNA families, 3 families, miR169, miR156 and miR172, were identified containing 19, 10 and 10 miRNAs, respectively; 28 families contained two to eight miRNAs; and 22 families were only represented by a single miRNA (Supplemental Fig. S2). [score:1]

In our study, miR169 was up regulated, therefore it is possible that over expression of this miRNA may have a similar effect on water loss in tobacco. [score:4]
A recent study has shown that over -expression of miRNA169 confers enhanced drought tolerance to tomatoes [20] through the reduction in activity of the stomata. [score:3]
Whether up regulation of miR169 plays a role in stomata activity in a similar manner in tobacco, the up regulation of this miRNA suggests that it plays some role in mediating stress response to aluminum oxide nanoparticles. [score:3]
Nine miRNAs (miR159, miR162, miR167, miR169, miR395, miR396, miR397, miR398, and miR399) had statistically significant increases in fold change of expression (Figure 3). [score:3]
miR159, miR162, miR167, and miR169 were significantly up regulated with fold changes in the 1% Al [2]O [3] nanoparticle treatment of 5.9, 5.5, 11.4, and 6.0 fold, respectively. [score:2]
Our results show that nine miRNAs were significantly up regulated (miR159, miR162, miR167, miR169, miR395, miR396, miR397, miR398, and miR399) as the concentration of aluminum oxide nanoparticles increased. [score:2]
Further experiments would need to be performed to see if miR169 controls the movement of stomata in the same manner as it does in tomato. [score:1]
We chose miR156, miR157, miR159, miR162, miR167, miR169, miR172, miR395, miR396, miR397, miR398, and miR399 because they are well known miRNAs that already have known functions in plants, but our aim was to see if they may have alternative uses in abiotic stress response to aluminum oxide nanoparticles. In addition, seven conserved miRNA families (miR169, miR395, miR397, miR398, miR399, miR408 and miR827) were not detected in the untreated tobacco root sample but were detected in at least one damage treated sample (Additional file 1: Table S1). [score:1]
