MiR399 is up-regulated by Pi starvation and the target gene UBC24 (ubiquitin-conjugationg E2 enzyme) is down-regulated in Arabidopsis [50]. [score:8]
Six miRNAs (miR160, miR168, miR169, miR319, miR395, and miR399) were identified to be differentially expressed in roots in response to the transient low N condition and all of them were up-regulated (Table S2). [score:6]
Six miRNAs (miR167, miR169, miR395, miR399, miR408, and miR528) were found in roots in response to the chronic low nitrate condition, all of which were down-regulated (Table S2). [score:4]
The target genes of miR399 in maize, however, are not homologous to UBC24. [score:3]
Given our results, it can be suggested that miR399 might play a role in reducing Pi transport to keep a balance between N and P. MiR528 was found to be repressed in response to drought stress in leaves in T. dicoccoides and there are no verified target genes [52]. [score:3]
Nine miRNA faimlies (miR164, miR169, miR172, miR397, miR398, miR399, miR408, miR528, and miR827) were identified to be differentially expressed in leaves in response to chronic low N condition. [score:3]
With regards to tissue specificity(or tissue dependent), some miRNAs were only regulated in roots or leaves, such as miR160, miR167, miR168, miR319 and miR395 in roots, and miR164, miR172, miR397, miR398 and miR827 in leaves, while some others were regulated in both tissues, such as miR169, miR399, miR408 and miR528 (Fig. 4). [score:3]
The second category includes miR395, miR397, miR398, miR399, miR408, miR528, and miR827, whose potential target genes are predominantly involved in energy metabolism and scavenging of the oxidative species produced during stress. [score:3]
The module of miR399/ PHO2 had been defined as being involved in Pi signalling and regulating pathways [13]. [score:2]
Nine miRNA families (miR164, miR169, miR172, miR397, miR398, miR399, miR408, miR528, and miR827) were identified in leaves, and nine miRNA families (miR160, miR167, miR168, miR169, miR319, miR395, miR399, miR408, and miR528) identified in roots. [score:1]
Among these miRNAs, miR169 (169p; 169f,g,h; 169i,j,k), miR399 (399d,j), miR408, and miR528 (528a,b) were found to be N-responsive in both leaves and roots (Fig. 1). [score:1]

This inference was further supported by a grafting experiment, which showed that a root-derived deficiency signal induces miRNA399 expression in the shoots; the induced miRNA399 is then delivered to the roots where it targets PHO2 transcripts for degradation [42]. [score:5]
The up-regulation of miRNA399 by Pi-deficiency, which have been demonstrated to regulate Pi -deficient responses [39], was observed in the shoots and roots of the low P-sensitive inbred line 31778 only after 8 days of P deficiency (Fig.   6a). [score:5]
miRNA399 is induced by P stress and regulates phosphate homeostasis in Arabidopsis, rice, and soybean by suppressing a ubiquitin-conjugating E2 enzyme, PHO2 [34, 36, 39, 41]. [score:4]
The expression of miRNA399 after 8 days of Pi deficiency was much higher in 31778 than in CCM454 (Fig.   6b), which was consistent with the sequencing data. [score:3]
Some key regulators of P homeostasis, which have mainly been characterized from Arabidopsis and rice, include the MYB transcription factor PHR1, which functions as the central regulator of downstream genes [10]; members of WRKY [11– 15] and PHO families [16, 17]; the miRNAs miRNA399 and miRNA827 [18, 19]; E3 ligase NLA and SIZ1 [19, 20]; and IPS1/At4 [21, 22]. [score:1]
Because miRNA399 is important in phosphate homeostasis in plants, we selected miRNA399 for further validation by small RNA northern analysis. [score:1]
In both shoots and roots, miRNA399 abundance was much higher in the low P-sensitive inbred line 31778 than in the low P-tolerant inbred line CCM454. [score:1]
In the phloem sap of rapeseed, miRNA399 abundance depends on P status [38], suggesting that miRNA399 might act as a systemic signal. [score:1]
The enrichment, fractionation, and detection of miRNA399 from total RNA were performed as previously described [56]. [score:1]

In plants, the classical example of an miRNA decoy is IPS1, which is a long non-coding RNA that contains an ath-miR399 decoy site and can serve as an miRNA decoy to inactivate ath-miR399 and up-regulate the expression of the ath-miR399 primary target PHO2 [39]. [score:8]

For example, an intergenic lncRNA family Mt4/ IPS1/ At4/ TPSI1/ OsPI1 found in multiple plant species [21– 24] contains a ~23 bp short and conserved motif; this motif binds miR-399 via sequence complementarity, the basis of “target mimicry” [25]. [score:3]
